Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a positive approach to change that focuses on probing a firm’s best practices and attributes to help achieve organizational success. As its theories and applications are being applied within a growing number of organizations, the results are demonstrating that the AI approach is contributing directly to measurable, bottom-line results.

At the heart of AI theory is the idea that we generate more of what we focus on. This is the same theory that professional athletes engage in when they use positive visualization to see themselves winning their events. A guiding principle of AI then, is: A positive focus tends to deliver a positive effect. This represents a significant divergence from conventional business wisdom, which advocates that the best way to overcome a major challenge is to focus on what’s not working and determine how to improve it or solve the problem. Let’s be honest, focusing on the negative isn’t fun and can feel unproductive – not to mention what it does to morale, especially on a project that’s going very well, yet still has a 10% margin for improvement.
